I was surprised to learn that the Theotokos Mural was as isolated then as it is now. I had assumed there had been the usual crowds of angels & saints that then got plastered over, & only she was revealed by the Archaeologists.

That's absolutely stunning, it is such a shame that this magnificent Roman building has been torn down to make room for today's basilica. I would have loved seeing in this reconstruction the interior of the two mausoleums, those two domed structures on the left of the main building. Those were sadly demolished too, and inside them were buried many important late Roman Empire emperors and generals.

Ayia Sofia (Αγία Σοφία) with full name: "Ναός της Αγίας του Θεού Σοφίας" - "Church of God's Holly Wisdom". One of the greatest and magnificently beautiful architectural buildings ever build by men!!! Of course there was not only the magnificent architecture but also the unique interior. Marble floors and Columns, interior design and the unique Mosaics all over the walls, floors and ceilings of this Greek Byzantine Orthodox Christian church!!!

Hagia Sophia wasn’t built during the Byzantine time it was built by a Roman Emperor who spoke Latin. Byzantine separates the Latin speaking period with the Greek speaking period which was called Byzantine. Hagia Sofia was built before the Greek period

What happened to orthodox in 1204 by catholics ? " the Latins took control of Constantinople and then sacked it for three days, killing some 2,000 Greeks. Nicetas Choniates writes of how the Latins looted and profaned Haghia Sophia, leaving the city in utter desolation. They destroyed the high altar, a work of art admired by the entire world, and shared out the pieces among themselves… And they brought horses and mules into the church, the better to carry off the holy vessels and the engraved silver and gold they had torn from the throne, and the pulpit… A common harlot was enthroned in the patriarch's chair, to hurl insults at Jesus Christ; and she sang bawdy songs and profaned the holy place… nor was there any mercy shown to virtuous maidens, innocent maids or even virgins consecrated to God… In the streets, houses and churches there could be heard only cries and lamentations… Here there were fights and quarrels over loot, there prisoners were being led away, and everywhere among the raped and wounded lay the dead " Book- Istanbul: The imperial city . Chapter - 13 Author - John Freely EDITION - 1998

That was Not a church while takeover by conqueror. but abandoned building. No spritual was there while safeguarded ( not stolen ) by muslims . Look history. " a church ( Hagia Sophia) that had been avoided by the Orthodox since, in their view, the Catholics had contaminated it in December 1452, when the formal celebration of the union of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches had taken place. Since that fateful day it had been seen as the abode of demons and a pagan temple " " And the Great church was considered by them to be a refuge of demons and a Hellenic ( Pagan ) Temple ". Book : The siege and the fall of Constantinople in 1453 . Author Marios Philippides and Walter K . Hanak Edition : 2011 Page : 227 , 228 " The fact is that during the last months of Byzantine Constantinople, the Great Church had been avoided by the pious Orthodox, who had concluded that their cathedral had been contaminated by Catholic rites during the celebration of the union between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches in December 1452....... After the celebration of the union, the church never functioned properly and was regarded as the abode of demons and as a pagan temple, " and the Great Church was considered by them to be a refuge of demons and a Hellenic temple.............Santa Sophia became a focal point for the Greeks only after the Turks entered the city, when the population flocked there in search of asylum. " Evidence: Tears of the Great Church Author : Marios Philippides Page : 724 So , the Aya Sofia not stolen by muslims. That building ( Hagia Sophia ) was abandoned by orthodox patriarch and people. Muslim rulers took just abandoned building , not running church. Still, it is safeguarded by muslims . Now, This is property of muslims Aya Sofia is not the property of today's race . That place belongs to Greco-Ottaman's ancestors. Religion can not have property. Property actually belongs to people. Property of the religion can only be its holy book. So religion can claim only its holy book as its property. Immovable property always belongs to the people. So, Aya Sofia is not a religious issue. It is a property issue. This issue settled by new patriarch of Constantinople in 1453 . He accepted the changes. He never even requested to return. Because, Hagia Sophia was occupied by catholic demons as per orthodox belief.

"Turkey: First new church in 90 years" Ankara : Turkey's Islamic rooted government has authorised the building of the first church in the country since the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1923 , AFP learned. The church is for the country's tiny Syriac community and will be built in the Istanbul suburb of Yesilkoy on the shores of the Sea of Marmara , which already has Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Catholic churches. The country's ancient Syriac minority, which now numbers less than 20,000 , live mostly in the southeast, and tend to be either Orthodox or Catholic. @@mrpunjabibeast7806 The Ottamans set such a good example as pacific conquerors that they won the confidence of many former Byzantine subjects . For example , when Nicaea fell , Orhan allowed all who wanted to leave the city to depart freely , taking with them their holy relics , but few availed themselves of the chance . No reprisals were taken against those who had resisted , and the city was left to manage its internal affairs under its own municipal government . BOOK : Encyclopaedia of the Ottoman Empire . " The inhabitants ( of nicaea ) surrendered not from starvation or defeat but from a calculation of their own best interests. They were quickly and willingly incorporated into the growing Osmanli nation. Only eight years after the fall of Nicaea, the Patriarch of Constantinople was shocked to learn that many of the citizens of this once great Christian city had already abjured their Orthodox faith and embraced Islam. In 1339 and 1340 he addressed encyclicals to them for the salvation of their souls, but it was too late. " BOOK : The Last Centuries of Byzantium 1261-1453. page - 171 AUTHOR : Donald M. Nicol So , conversion by Ottomans not forced but the Greek Christian embraced Islam. "The Osmanlis did not therefore slaughter every Christian 'miscreant' in their path. Rather they encouraged the Christian inhabitants of the countryside and the towns to join them. Islamic law and tradition declared that enemies who surrendered on demand should be treated with tolerance. The Christians of Bithynia were obliged to pay the haradj or capitation tax for the privilege of being tolerated, but this was no more burdensome than the taxes they had paid to the Byzantine government which had neglected their interests. Once they had made the decision to surrender or defect the Byzantine population did not find the change of masters too distressing. The inducements were often strong for the Osmanlis wanted to increase their numbers. A band of Catalans even went over to them in 1304. Some Christians went all the way with the conquerors and were converted to Islam. But this was not demanded of them, for all who entered the service of Osman, Turks or Greeks, became part of· the same nation and were collectively known as Osmanlis. It was because they began to look to the future instead of living from day to day that the Osmanlis prospered when the other emirates declined.
